The Brainerd Regional Human Services
Center had a stockpile of empty 15-gallon drums that
previously held products used in the laundry. When Brita
Sailer of the Northcentral Materials Exchange visited
the facility, she suggested listing the drums with the
Materials Exchange program. Empty drums are commonly
taken for reuse by many types of companies and organizations.
Al Vandenbergag, a horse rancher, has taken 235 of the
drums, which he assembled into floating docks and diving
platforms. This exchange meant 1,935 pounds of drums
were not disposed of and the two companies saved $6,100
in avoided disposal and purchase costs.
